Consume More Protein
Whenever you work out, you are actually breaking your muscles down. There will be micro tears that will need time to heal. It is during this recovery process that the body adapts to the stress by building back stronger than before. It will require lots of protein to do this properly. If you want to gain mass, then try to consumer food items that are rich in this nutrient. Aim to get about your bodyweight in grams for your daily protein intake. This can be a lot so most people supplement their diet with protein shakes which are convenient and easy to digest.
Join a Gym, Get a Trainer
You may also want to join a gym to get access to specialized equipment. You will benefit from all the machines, free weights, fixtures, and classes offered in these places. Most of all, you will have access to fitness professionals. Consider hiring a personal trainer at least in the beginning. Trainers will teach you the basic techniques and guide you in executing movements with proper form. This is important if you want to avoid injuries. Once you get a feel for the exercises, you can do it all by yourself or even build a home gym for convenience.
Heavy Weights, Low Reps
If you want to be lean, get smaller weights and put in as many reps as you can. If you want to bulk up, then aim for heavy weights with a low number of repetitions. Six reps would be plenty. Find a setting that will allow you to achieve this much and no more. Just be sure to warm up properly to prevent muscles strains and pulls. Always observe proper form.
